The Hacker Ethic

Hacking at self, ethics, and life.

Meat-head

You are meat. Go ahead, poke your arm: flesh and bones. You are subject to the same basic instincts as other beasts. Don’t forget it.

Hungry? Tired? Unhealthy? Unbalanced? Unhappy? Your cognitive skills are tied to your machine’s state. Tend to the machine. Tend to it carefully, as it’s a complex system that can degrade quickly.

You control the balance of your machine. You feed it. You allow it to rest and relax. You exercise it. You stretch it. It’s yours, don’t fuck it up.

Hacking your thinking

The problem is you.

It’s not your tools. It’s not your coworkers. It’s not the government. It’s not the damned trans fats in your fucking breakfast cereal. It’s you.

Understand the world around you. Understand your tools. Understand yourself. Wait, watch, listen, and learn, before blaming anyone other than yourself. Only when you realize that you’re in your own way can you improve your life.

Normally, we do not so much look at things as overlook them.

Escape the noise

It’s everywhere. It’s here now.

Blinking, flashing, scrolling, playing, begging for your attention, eroding your mind, stealing your focus from under your feet. It’s pollution. It’s fecal matter. It’s horrible.

Turn it off, all of it. IM. Torrents. Email. Browser tabs. It’s all shite. It’s killing you. It’s killed your muse already.

Do one thing. Do it well. The noise can wait until later. Or never?

I doubt if a single individual could be found from the whole of mankind free from some form of insanity. The only difference is one of degree. A man who sees a gourd and takes it for his wife is called insane because this happens to very few people.
